What is nicotine: how it works, why it's addictive, and where it actually comes from

Nicotine is a word that most people automatically associate with cigarettes. But the reality is, as usual, a bit more complex. Nicotine isn't just "the bad stuff from cigarettes." It's a natural substance found in the tobacco plant and has quite interesting effects on the human brain.

Because there are so many half-truths and myths circulating around nicotine, I've decided to gradually create articles on nicotin.cz that explain things normally, understandably, and without unnecessary extremes.

So, let's start from the very beginning.

What nicotine actually is

Nicotine is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in the tobacco plant. The plant produces it as a defense against pests. However, for humans, it has completely different effects.

When nicotine enters the body, it primarily affects the nervous system and brain. This is why it can cause, for example:

  • a feeling of slight stimulation
  • improved concentration
  • in some people, even mild relaxation

This is also one of the reasons why people have been using nicotine for hundreds of years.

However, it's important to state one thing: nicotine is addictive. It's not something one should just experiment with if they've never used it before. And certainly not under 18 years of age.

How nicotine affects the brain

When nicotine enters the body, it reaches the brain within a few seconds.

In the brain, it binds to so-called nicotinic receptors, which influence the release of various substances. One of the best known is dopamine, which is associated with feelings of reward and motivation.

This is precisely why nicotine can have these effects for some people:

  • short-term improvement in concentration
  • a feeling of mental stimulation
  • a quick "boost"

At the same time, it is also the reason why addiction can develop.

The brain quickly gets used to nicotine.

Nicotine vs. smoking

This is where the biggest confusion arises.

When talking about the health risks of smoking, most people automatically blame nicotine. But in reality, the main problem is combustion, smoke, tar...

Combustion produces thousands of chemical substances, many of which are toxic or carcinogenic.

While nicotine is an addictive substance, a large portion of the health risks associated with smoking come from tobacco smoke, not from nicotine itself.

Incidentally, this is one of the reasons why various smoke-free alternatives have emerged in recent years.

How people use nicotine today

Today, nicotine is no longer associated only with traditional cigarettes. There are more ways people use it.

Electronic cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes work without combustion. The device heats a liquid (e-liquid), which turns into an aerosol.

If you're interested in learning more, you can check out our range of electronic cigarettes.

E-liquids

E-liquid is a refill for electronic cigarettes. It contains basic ingredients such as propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and sometimes also nicotine.

At nikotin.cz, we are gradually adding various variants, which you can find in the e-liquids category.

Nicotine pouches

Another option is nicotine pouches, which are placed under the upper lip and gradually release nicotine.

If you're interested in what variants exist, you can check out the nicotine pouches category.

Why nikotin.cz was created

Maybe you stumbled upon this page by chance through Google. Or you heard about nicotine pouches or vaping somewhere and wanted to find out more.

The reason this website exists is actually quite simple.

The internet is full of two extremes:

  • marketing that claims everything is perfectly fine,
  • or, conversely, articles that lump all nicotine products into one bag

The reality, of course, is somewhere in between.

That's why I decided to create nikotin.cz as a place where a clear library of information about nicotine, vaping, and other smoke-free alternatives will gradually emerge.

Without exaggeration, without scaremongering – just normally.

Summary

Nicotine is a natural substance from tobacco that affects the nervous system and can cause addiction. A strong one. People today use it in various ways – from traditional cigarettes to modern products such as electronic cigarettes or nicotine pouches.

If you are more interested in the topic, more articles are gradually being added to nikotin.cz, where we discuss, for example:

  • the difference between vaping and smoking
  • how to choose your first e-cigarette
  • how much nicotine is in a cigarette
  • and others

The goal is singular: to provide a place for you to form your own informed opinion about nicotine.
